About Us
Cloud 9 Didgeridoos sprang to life in June of 2003 started by Scott "Gusty" Christensen & his dad Jim Christensen.  They were in search of high quality Didgeridoos in the Denver area and were really having trouble finding them.  Both were new to the didge community and unaware of other Colorado-based didge builders like Ben Hicks and Michael Stanwood, so in May of 2003 they started using PVC pipe as a means to create custom didges (both Jim & Gusty are familiar with swimming pool & hot tub design and repair so pvc pipe seemed the logical choice).

Armed with an Oxy-Acetylene torch, gloves and respirator masks, Gustys' vocation as an audio engineer and recording studio designer came into play as they began creating and modifying these pvc didges.  He knew the shapes necessary to achieve the sound he had in mind, but was unable to get the size of the bell, or the conical body shape he was after.  However, he and his dad both learned much about how length and inside diameter affect the over-all sound quality and playability.

Still relying on what they learned in the hot tub business years ago, Gusty & Jim began experimenting  with 1/4" plywood in Jim's wood shop in Brush Colorado.  They were basically making a Redwood hot tub that was about 2" diameter, 5' deep, and open on both ends.  Through much experimentation and a few very lucky theories, they came up with a process by which they can use much thinner wood (less than 1/8th inch) and shape it any way they want, to get the great back pressure and incredible sound now associated with the "Cloud 9 Didgeridoo" name.
